GREAT For A Sustainable Future Series: Green Finance
Much has been said about the need to decarbonise and go green. But how are businesses meant to make potentially large transitions in their operations to achieve those goals? Green Finance is developing rapidly and London and Hong Kong are two of its global hubs. As the world gathers at COP26 in Glasgow come and find out more from policy makers, thought leaders and financial professionals about how green finance products can help companies plan and deliver the sustainable change that boards, shareholders and customers are talking about.
This event is being organised jointly by the British Chamber and the UK Department for International Trade. It will feature both Hong and UK perspectives as well as the opportunity for discussion and networking. Do join us for what promises to be an important discussion of today’s hot topic followed by wine and networking at the end.
About the speakers
Nick Heath took up the role of Director General Trade and Investment at the British Consulate-General in Hong Kong in April 2021. He leads the large Department for International Trade team in Hong Kong and Macao and supports the Consul General to drive the commercial and financial relationship between the UK and the two SARs. Nick arrived in Hong Kong in August 2019 and has served as Temporary Deputy Consul-General. Between 2015 and 2019, he was Deputy Ambassador at the British Embassy in The Hague. Earlier in his career, Nick worked on a range of issues including EU Exit negotiations and Middle East affairs. He also served as Private Secretary to a number of UK Government Ministers.
Nick has a first class degree in History from the University of Oxford. He is married with two children and enjoys cooking, cricket and reading.
Mark Carney is currently the UN Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and Prime Minister Johnson’s Finance Adviser for COP26. Mark is a member of the Arnhold Distinguished Fellowship Program Board within Conservation International. He is also an external member of Stripe’s Board, a global technology company building economic infrastructure for the internet.
Mark was previously Governor of the Bank of England (from 2013 to 2020), and Governor of the Bank of Canada (from 2008 to 2013).
Internationally, Mark was Chair of the Financial Stability Board (from 2011 to 2018), He chaired the Global Economy Meeting and Economic Consultative Committee of the Bank for International Settlements (from 2018-2020) and was First Vice-Chair of the European Systemic Risk Board (from 2013-2020). He is Vice Chair of Brookfield Asset Management and a member of the Global Advisory Board of PIMCO, the Group of Thirty, the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum, as well as the boards of Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Peterson Institute for International Economics and the Hoffman Institute for Global Business and Society at INSEAD.
Mark was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Canada in 1965. After growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, he obtained a bachelor degree in Economics from Harvard and masters and doctorate degrees in Economics from Oxford.
After a thirteen-year career with Goldman Sachs, Mark was appointed Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. In 2004, he became Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance. He held this position until his appointment as Governor of the Bank of Canada in February 2008.
Alderman William Russell took office as the 692nd Lord Mayor of the City of London on 8th November 2019. He served as a Sheriff of the City of London in 2016-17 and, in that capacity, supported the then Lord Mayor, undertaking numerous visits and official functions. On 30th September 2020 William was elected to serve a further year in office, to provide continuity of civic governance during the Coronavirus emergency. He is also the co-chair of UK-china Green Finance Taskforce.
His mayoral theme for his time in office is “Global UK – The New Future”, supporting businesses through the COVID19 crisis, speeding the recovery and seizing the opportunities of the new future.
William has over thirty years’ experience in the financial and business City including holding senior positions in the national and international Banking sector. In 1987 he went to work for First Boston Corporation before joining Merrill Lynch in 1992 as an Investment Banker in Institutional Equity Sales, working in Asia, New York and London. William is currently Chair of CDAM, a London based Asset Management business and Senior Advisor to STJ Advisors.
Alderman Russell was born in London in 1965 and was educated at Eton College and Durham University. He is married to Hilary who also went to Durham University.
Panel discussion speakers
Mr Christopher Hui Ching-yu was appointed the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury on 22 April 2020. He serves on the boards of Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited, Hong Kong Airport Authority and also as the Chairman of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation.
Prior to his appointment, Mr Hui was the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Financial Services Development Council. He spent 13 years at the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, having been the Managing Director for Market Development and Head of Project Management and also in various senior roles in Listing and Market Development. He also worked for a number of multi-national companies in the private sector. He started his career as an Administrative Officer in the Government in 1999 and served in the Economic Development Branch, the Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing and the Home Affairs Department.
Mr Hui previously held a number of public roles including Councillor of the City University of Hong Kong, Member of the Mandatory Provident Fund Authority Process Review Panel, Hong Kong Stock Exchange Listing Review Committee and also Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants Disciplinary Panel.
Mr Hui holds Bachelor and Master (Hon) Degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, and Master of Business Administration Degree from INSEAD. He also attended the Stanford Executive Programme (SEP).
Jonathan Drew leads the ESG Solutions Group for Global Banking at HSBC. Jonathan graduated with an MA in Economics from Cambridge University in England and is also qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Jonathan started his banking career more than 20 years ago in London and after working in rapidly emerging Latin America and raising capital for large scale projects in the Middle East has been based in Hong Kong since 1997 witnessing first-hand the rapid growth of Asia and notably China. During this time, he has been involved in successful transactions across a wide range of sectors including advising on and arranging finance for projects and business across industrial and services sectors including energy, manufacturing, transportation and infrastructure, with a focus on resource efficiency and sustainability. These transactions have involved supporting projects, corporates and institutions to approach various financial markets and structuring innovative and tailored products including to meet the often large and always specific needs of clients. In recent years Jonathan has also been responsible for the structuring and delivery of sustainable bonds, loans and other financial support for corporate and institutional clients as well as collaborating with colleagues across businesses in the creation of sustainable investment opportunities.
Jonathan is a member of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Green Finance Association and also chairs the Asia Pacific Loan Market Association Green and Sustainable Loan Committee.
Matthew Fairclough's practice covers a broad range of debt and equity capital markets, advising on issues of straight debt securities, MTN, CD and CP programmes, convertible and exchangeable bonds (including pre-IPO financings), corporate hybrid capital and regulatory capital products. His clients include underwriters, corporate, financial institution and sovereign issuers and trustees. Matt also advises on liability management transactions, including tender and exchange offers and consent solicitations, debt restructurings, debt for equity swaps and bespoke private capital markets financings. He is a trusted advisor on regulatory issues for banks in Asia Pacific, particularly in the regulatory capital space. Before relocating to London in 2020, Matt spent nearly 15 years practising in the Asia Pacific region, in Clifford Chance's offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo and advised on transactions throughout the region. He is admitted to practice in England & Wales and in Hong Kong.
Tracy Wong Harris is the Head of Sustainable Finance for Greater China and North Asia at Standard Chartered Bank, focusing on the Bank’s sustainable finance strategy, by developing new products and solutions, further incorporating ESG considerations into banking decisions, and identifying sustainable finance opportunities for clients. Tracy is also the Vice President and Deputy Secretary General of Hong Kong Green Finance Association (HKGFA), the Senior Advisor to the Green Building Project of HK2050isNow, an appointed member of the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) Climate Change Technical Expert Group (TEG), and a Board member of AIDS Concern.
Prior to joining Standard Chartered, Tracy had been driving the green and sustainable finance development in Hong Kong and had over 16 years of financial markets experiences across various fixed income and complex structured products in JPMorgan, Mizuho International, Barclays Capital and BNP Paribas based in London and Hong Kong.
About the moderator
Pat Woo is a Partner at KPMG China and is the Global Co Chair for Sustainable Finance for KPMG Impact. He also leads the Sustainable Finance practice in Hong Kong and is very active in developing the ESG landscape for Hong Kong and international financial centres in the region.
Pat has been active for over 13 years in the field of sustainable development. In his previous capacity as a director at Cent ral Textiles, through his leadership, Central Textiles was the first textile company in Asia to issue a Sustainability Report und er the Global Reporting Initiatives (“GRI”) Guidelines in 2008. The report subsequently received an award from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (“ACCA”).
Through his initiatives Central Textiles subsequently won the Gold Award for the Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental Award in 2012 and the Gold Award for Hong Kong Award for Environmental Excellence (“HKAEE”) Manufacturing Sector in 2013. He also helped KPMG win the HKAEE Gold Award Service and Trading Sector in 2019.
Since 2018, Pat has chaired the working group on the development of ESG strategy for Hong Kong for the Financial Services Development Council. The working group have issued 2 policy papers during his term and the recommendations made aiming to catalyse the development of the sustainable finance market in Hong Kong have been well received. He is also a member of the steering group on developing green finance for the Greater Bay Area, which includes, Hong Kong, Macau and 10 other cities in mainland China.
