Statement on the Passing of Mr Tung Chee-hwa GBM
The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Tung Chee-hwa GBM, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Taking office at a defining crossroads in Hong Kong’s history in 1997, Mr Tung led the territory through its transition with unwavering commitment to public service, steering Hong Kong through complex formative years and major regional economic challenges.
Rooted in his background as a globally respected shipping executive, Mr Tung understood the vitality of international commerce and consistently engaged with foreign business communities to reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a premier global gateway. He held longstanding ties with the United Kingdom, where he completed his studies in maritime engineering at the University of Liverpool and retained an enduring affection for the city and its football club.
On behalf of our members, General Committee, and staff, the Chamber extends our heartfelt condolences to Mr Tung’s family, friends and all those who honour his lasting contribution to Hong Kong.
