The History and Redevelopment of Battersea Power Station

Supported by the Construction Industry Group and Real Estate Committee

Speaker:

Franck Robert, Partner, BuroHappold Engineering

Decommissioned in 1975 gaining Grade 2 listing in 1980 Battersea Power Station sat and perplexed many with grand plans for its redevelopment for nearly 35 years. BuroHappold Engineering has remained one of the few constant parties throughout this period. This session will provide a brief history of the power station, previous development attempts, outline the events that have now rendered the project viable, unlocking one of the largest urban regeneration sites in Europe namely Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea. It will then present the current scheme for the power station, key site constraints, key engineering and construction challenges and current progress that are turning this 195 ha site into a thriving, high quality urban and commercial quarter.

About the speaker

Franck Robert is a structural engineer with over 20 years’ experience bringing with him a technical focus with expertise in mixed-use schemes. He was made a Partner of the company in 2018. Franck is a Royal Academy of Engineering visiting professor in Global Sustainable Design and Humanitarian Engineering Design at Coventry University.

As a proactive problem solver, Franck is dedicated to the quality of the design and delivery of all his projects. Another strength lies in his ability of being able to drive and rally teams together. His energy and practical approach have enabled him to successfully oversee and deliver large and very complex, challenging multidisciplinary projects such as the current Battersea Power Station scheme; one of the largest such urban regeneration projects in Europe. To date Battersea has already won a clutch of awards, including Planning and Placemaking 2016, and the Institution of Civil Engineering award for the sensitive restoration of the iconic chimneys, which crown the Grade II listed building.

In his spare time he is an extremely keen cyclist, and has taken part in the group relay from London to Cannes for MIPIM, and is planning to do so again in 2020. And, ever the engineer at heart, he also enjoys working with his hands with a keen interest in woodwork in particular Franck enjoys the combination of material, design, creativity, rigour, practicality and buildability that are required to create objects made of wood, His creations to date include jewellery boxes, wardrobe, book shelves and more recently chairs for his children.
