With major institutional investors and asset owners increasing their focus on ESG (Environmental Social Governance) performance in their investments, sustainable finance has grown to over US$25 trillion under management globally.  The Hong Kong asset management industry has previously been slow on the uptake of ESG integrated investments.  However, with the recent release of the Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) paper issued in November 2018, recommending public finance such as the Hong Kong Exchange Fund management by the HKMA and the Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) to integrate ESG performance into their investment decisions, the government intends to be the catalyst for the development of the ESG investment market in Hong Kong.  With the rapid developments of this space, this seminar aims to cover what this means to the asset management and financial services industry and how can they prepare themselves for this change.

About the speakers

Mark Dickens J.P. is a Board Member of the FSDC and a member of the Working Group that produced the FSDC’s Report of ESG.  He has been involved roles in securities market and corporate governance regulation for about 38 years in a number of senior roles first in Australia and since 1991 in Hong Kong.  His most recent roles have been Head of the Listing Division of HKEx from 2009 to 2013 and CEO of the Financial Reporting Council from 2013 to 2016. 

Ashley Hegland has been working with Swire Properties to develop its global sustainable development strategy – SD2030 – and its supporting governance system. His work with Swire Properties has been focused on building a strategy that both identifies innovation opportunities and mitigates risk across the company’s global assets. Ashley provided support on Swire Properties’ first green bond, issued in January 2018, and he is currently involved in a global portfolio climate risk analysis.
Over the past 20 years in the Asia-Pacific region, Ashley has advised blue chip MNC’s, including HSBC, Wal-Mart, China Light and Power (CLP), MTRC, HSH, and Shangri-La Hotel Group on sustainability strategy, ESG risk analysis, and stakeholder management.
Based in Hong Kong, Ashley is an active member of the regional sustainability and green finance community. He is also a Fellow of the Aspen Institute’s Business & Society program in the U.S. Ashley holds a MBA in Corporate Strategy and Sustainability Management from the Schulich School of Business (York University) in Canada.

Gabriel Wilson-Otto joined BNP Paribas Asset Management in 2019 as Head of Stewardship, Asia. Prior to joining BNPP AM, he spent 12 years at Goldman Sachs in Australia and Hong Kong and was most recently Executive Director, Head of GS SUSTAIN Asia.  Gabriel holds a double Bachelor’s degree from The University of Melbourne, majoring in Commerce (Finance and Economics) and Information Systems and is a CFA charterholder.

Katherine Ng joined Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) in 2013 as Head of Policy Team of the Listing Department.  Prior to that, Katherine served as Political Assistant to the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Hong Kong Government.  Before joining the Government, Katherine worked in an international investment bank and was in private practice with an international law firm in Hong Kong and London.  Katherine holds a Master of Arts in Law from Trinity College, University of Cambridge and is a qualified lawyer in both Hong Kong and England & Wales.  Katherine is the Chairman of Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute since December 2018. She is an Advisor to Our Hong Kong Foundation, a member of the Vocational Training Council’s Banking and Finance Industry Training Board, a Director of the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong and a fellow of the Aspen Institute. 

Pat Woo is a Partner of Business reporting & Sustainability at KPMG China and he also chaired the FSDC Working Group that produced the Hong Kong ESG strategy paper.  He is a certified public accountant and also has over 12 years’ experience in sustainability.  Pat holds a number of roles in the area of sustainable finance and sustainability including the Market Development Committee at FSDC, Sustainability & Integrated Reporting Advisory Panel at HK Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) and is also a member of the Environmental and Energy Committee at the British Chamber.
