Business Leaders Panel – Opportunities and Challenges

An update from business leaders from the Platinum Sponsor organisations who will be setting the scene around the opportunities and challenges for Hong Kong over the next 25 years (and beyond) and picking up on the topics to be explored during the Summit.

  

About the speakers

James Turner joined Prudential in November 2010 as the Director of Group-wide Internal Audit and was appointed Director of Group Finance in September 2015. James joined the Board as an Executive Director and Group Chief Risk Officer in March 2018. Prior to the demerger of M&G Plc, he led the negotiations with Hong Kong Insurance Authority on the revised capital framework for the Group and in July 2019 assumed responsibility for Group Compliance, becoming the Group Chief Risk and Compliance Officer, relocating to Hong Kong in August 2019. Prior to joining Prudential, James was the Deputy Head of Compliance for Barclays. Prior to Barclays, James led internal audit teams in UBS in both the UK and Switzerland.

 

 

Jing Liu joined HSBC in February 2021 and is Chief Economist for Greater China. Previously she worked as a senior economist at the Bank of International Settlements, where she focused on mainland China macro and financial system research. Prior to this, she worked as a senior manager in the financial stability surveillance division at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, mainly covering mainland China. Jing holds a PhD in economics from Cornell University, an MA in economics from the University of Kansas and master’s and bachelor’s degrees in management from Xi’an Jiaotong University.

 

 

 

Paul McSheaffrey has 18 years’ experience in Hong Kong serving a wide range of financial institutions with a principal focus on KPMG’s large banking accounts. 

Paul oversees relationships and all services across his clients with a personal focus on advising clients on financial reporting and on  risk management and compliance processes. In the past he has advised clients on IPO sponsor processes, financial crime and reporting, both regulatory and external.  Paul regularly engages with regulators, principally the HKMA, sharing views on industry and client matters.

Paul is Treasurer of the British Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Private Wealth Management Association Accreditation and Examination Committee and the Treasurer of the Asia Crypto Alliance.

 

Shuang Ding joined the Bank as Head of Greater China Economic Research in April 2015, and is now Chief Economist for Greater China and North Asia. He has more than 20 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. Shuang was previously Senior China Economist at Citigroup, where he had led the China Economic research team since early 2011. He worked at the IMF from 1997-2010, covering countries in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Europe. Prior to the IMF, Shuang was an economist with the People’s Bank of China from 1993-97. He has a Master’s from the Graduate School of the People’s Bank of China, an MBA from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor’s from Fudan University.

 

 

Stephen Kitts is the Managing Partner for Eversheds Sutherland in Asia. He is responsible for the offices in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing and also leads the Eversheds Sutherland Asia Pacific Alliance that is a non-exclusive group of +30 independent law firms in Asia Pacific. Stephen is a member of Eversheds Sutherland’s Global Board and its International Leadership team. Key to Stephen’s responsibilities is the development of the firm’s strategy in Asia with particular reference to client development and alignment with the global business.

Stephen has over 30 years of corporate finance expertise in providing advice to a diverse group of clients from entrepreneurs to financial institutions to international corporate. He has a particular specialism in international M&A transactions where he has successfully acted for clients on cross border acquisitions and disposals. Stephen uses his project management skills to ensure that his clients get the best deal done on the best terms – on time and on budget.

Stephen also focuses on private equity work acting for institutions on new investments, portfolio work and exits. He also has wide experience of acting for management teams as they work with private equity houses on new investment opportunities.

 

 About the moderator

Dr Anne Kerr holds various roles and positions within Mott MacDonald including that of Managing Director greater China. She arrived in HK as a graduate and has been involved in many strategic projects which have shaped HK’s development. Her focus is on developing places and facilities for people! Her involvement in projects which shaped and continued to develop Hong Kong’s international airport continue, and the experience gained through strategic development planning, environmental and sustainability assessments have been transferred to many other jurisdictions. She is actively involved in professional organisations including the British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong where she served on and chaired the Environment and Energy Committee and the Smart City Forum.
