ASEAN – The opportunities, challenges, and Hong Kong’s role

A session examining the opportunities in ASEAN, including in relation to RCEP, and Hong Kong’s role as a connector with GBA. 

 

 About the speakers

Dr. Jonathan Beard has consulted on transportation policy and related infrastructure finance and development in over 25 countries and has guided the strategic planning for some of the world’s largest and most successful ports, including Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Port Klang; and the logistics development strategy for several major airports, including Hong Kong and Beijing.

He has advised on privatisations, PPPs and M&As for a range of stakeholders, including governments, major international investors and operators. Jonathan is currently advising ASEAN on maritime connectivity and trade facilitation; and Malaysia on the decarbonization of its maritime sector and the development of green bunkering solutions.

 

 

Mr. Patrick Zhu joined HSBC in 1999 as an executive trainee, becoming one of the founding members of HSBC’s electronic banking and cash management businesses in mainland China and holding various roles including Product Manager, Sales Manager and Head of Sales. He became HSBC’s first International Manager (IM) from mainland China in 2004, with senior roles in credit approval and risk control for retail banking at HSBC Philippines and Indonesia respectively as an IM.

Before relocating to HK and assuming his current regional role, Mr Zhu was Managing Director, Country Head of Global Liquidity and Cash Management for HSBC in mainland China. Under his leadership during the past 3+ years, HSBC China cash management business experienced one of the fastest growth periods, and enhanced its leading position among foreign banks in China. Mr Zhu is also a Board Director of China’s Crossborder Interbank Payment System (CIPS) Co Ltd. 

Between 2007 and 2014, Mr Zhu was with ANZ where he held senior management roles in risk control, rural banking, cash management and cross-border renminbi business, in Melbourne, Chongqing and Shanghai.

 

Since 2017, Mr. Stephen Phillips has been the Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK), the Government Department responsible for attracting and facilitating foreign direct investment into Hong Kong.

In a career focused on Asia for more than thirty years, Stephen has held senior investment banking positions with Deutsche and BZW/Barclays Capital before co-founding a Hong Kong-based group of companies providing IT, financial and consultancy services across Asia. In 2006 became the Chief Executive of the China Britain Business Council, as well as Chairman of the EU China Business Association. He has held a number of non-executive and adviser roles in China.

Mr. Phillips holds a BSc in Chemistry and Law from the University of Exeter.

 

About the moderator

Lisa Foley oversees Brunswick’s Asia operations across the Group’s five offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo. As Asia Managing Partner, she supports the company’s growth in the region by providing strategic operational direction for the business, of which includes strengthening and developing its people and culture. 

With over 28 years of experience working in Asia, Lisa has an extensive executive management track record. Her experience and leadership have been focused on developing and delivering impactful business services and solutions to drive growth and ensure operating efficiency.  She was most recently the Chief Operating Officer, Asia for a leading international law firm, Ashurst. Prior to that, she served as Chief Operating Officer, Asia for Clyde & Co LLP. Lisa has also worked as a Chief Financial Officer for private equity and retail distribution organisations. 

Lisa holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Queensland and is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accounts in Australia (ACA).
