What does net zero by 2050 look like in the transport and logistics industries and how do we get there?

Governments around the world are committing to climate pledges to bring global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to net zero by 2050 and to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°c.
The HK Government has allocated over HK$47 billion to implement various energy saving and renewable energy measures, promote electric vehicles and vessels, and introduce innovative waste-to-energy and waste-to-resources facilities to help reduce waste and carbon emissions. 
Net zero represents a movement that drives businesses to create more ambitious new targets. Leading businesses can also share insights and experience to inform policies and regulations. For example, they can encourage governments to relax bureaucratic barriers on innovation to enable wider adoption of carbon-reduction technologies.

At this event, we will hear the perspectives from industry leaders in aviation, maritime and roads on whether zero emission is possible and what alternatives there are now.
Aviation – sustainable aviation fuel, research & development for the infrastructure needed to support the introduction of new electric and hydrogen planes
Maritime – development of clean maritime technology, decarbonising the maritime sector
Roads – decarbonise road vehicles, electric vehicles design, head towards zero emission vehicles

  

About the speakers

Andy Boulton is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer who started his career with London Transport in 1993. He moved to Dennis Specialist Vehicles as a Technical Service Engineer in 1997 solving technical issues with vehicles in service and managing new product introductions. This included a spell in Singapore before moving to Hong Kong to represent Dennis in the Asia Pacific Region in 2001. After Alexander Dennis was formed in 2004, Andy moved back to the UK and headed up the chassis sales team before moving back to Asia Pacific in 2012, originally based in Sydney with Custom Coaches before moving back to Hong Kong in 2014 where he is now based. Andy is currently the Business Development and Technical Director for Alexander Dennis in the Asia Pacific Region where he is responsible for sales and new product development for the region.


 

Simon Bennett started his career at sea in 1974 at age 17 as a Navigating Officer Cadet with the Union Castle Line/Clan Line. After a 3 year sabbatical from 1978 to 1981 to take an honours degree at UEA in Norwich, UK, where he read Environmental Science (majoring in Meteorology and Oceanography and minoring in Marine and Coastal Management/Environmental Hazards) he resumed his seagoing career. 37.32 years ago, he joined Swire Pacific Offshore (SPO), which provides marine support services to the global offshore oil and gas exploration and production industry.
Following several voyages as Master, he came ashore in 1991, working as HSE and Country Manager in Brunei, HSE Manager with Swire Production Testers working with their rig-based Early Production Systems for Maersk in Qatar and Shell in Iran and Thailand, and Marketing Manager in Dubai, before he moved to his last but one job as General Director operating three of SPO’s new icebreaking Platform Supply Vessels in the Russian Far East.
Since returning to the warmth of Singapore again thirteen ago, he now wears the hat of GM for Sustainable Development for SPO – with 50 OSVs operating globally, since late 2010 also for Swire Shipping, the Swire group’s privately owned deep-sea company – with 40 liner / breakbulk ships trading in Pacific Ocean, and since the beginning of 2021, Swire Bulk with ~140 mainly Handymax and Aframax bulkers trading in the Atlantic and Pacific basins. All of SPO, Swire Shipping and Swire Bulk have their Operational Headquarters in Singapore.
SPO has been carbon neutral since 2011, being the project proponent for a REDD+ (avoided deforestation) carbon credit scheme in the 5,000ha dry quebracho forest in Paraguay, the land title for which it donated to a Paraguayan NGO, and to the indigenous Indians who live in the forest.
Simon is on the Board of Trustees of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), for which Swire Shipping was both the founder member in Asia, a member of the founding steering group of the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI) and has been on the SMU Maritime Business Operations Track Advisory Council for the past 6 years. Simon has given occasional guest lectures on Sustainability in Shipping at local Singapore tertiary educational institutes: SMU, RMIT and SIT, and for the MPA at their MPA Academy, and is currently contributing to a book on ‘Securing Water, Energy and Food in the Pacific’ on behalf of the University of New South Wales in Sydney and UNESCO
He was a Director of both the Singapore Environment Council, and the Free Community Church, the only GLBTQ inclusive church in Singapore, for the four years up to the end of Jun 2020 and is currently a Director of both the World Ocean Council, and the British Chamber of Commerce (Singapore), where he is represents shipping and sustainability on the committees for their a) Sustainability and Responsibility, b) Transport and Logistics and c) Diversity and Inclusion business groups.

 

Neville Hargreaves, Vice President, Waste to Fuels at Velocys. Velocys enables sustainable fuels made from waste materials for aviation and heavy goods transport, with net zero (or even better) emissions. Velocys technology was developed from spinouts from Oxford University in the UK and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the USA. Velocys licenses its technology to third parties and is also developing two projects to make sustainable aviation fuel, the Bayou Fuels project in Natchez, Mississippi, USA and the Altalto waste-to-fuel project in the UK, the latter in collaboration with British Airways. These plants will produce aviation fuel with net zero greenhouse gas emissions and significantly reduced exhaust pollutants.
 
Neville’s 30 years of industrial experience includes a wide range of technical and commercial roles over 12 years at Exxon, as well as four years with Bain and Company, the strategy consulting firm. He has led teams to deliver complex projects with many stakeholders across global public companies, brought over 70 new products to market, led two small businesses and launched a successful innovation programme for the UK government. He has an MA from Cambridge University and a PhD in chemistry from University College London, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
 
Neville leads the Altalto project for Velocys and is also actively involved in the development of the sustainable aviation fuels industry. He is a director of the Renewable Transport Fuels Association, the UK’s trade body for sustainable fuels, and a member of the Jet Zero Council, the senior-level body set up by the UK Government to support the pathway to net zero carbon aviation.
 

 

About the moderator

Wai-duen Lee is a consultant, specializing in transport infrastructure projects.  She has advised clients in the travel and transportation industry in both the private and public sectors for 20 years. Her projects have footprints in more than 21 countries, covering all modes of transportation: sea, air, surface / land, and new technologies, ranging from SME initiatives to master-planning of the world’s busiest seaports and airports. Wai-duen received her BSc (Hons) and BA from the University of California in Berkeley, and Master in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
