Smart City Development in Asia Pacific – Impact of Technology
Motivations for smart city development are shifting – from excitement over what digital technologies have to offer to a more thoughtful consideration of how these technologies can be put to work to improve the lives of citizens.
In January, KPMG China, in association with CLP Holdings, JOS, Siemens, Smart City Consortium and Wilson Group, launched a new report on smart city development entitled Connected Cities: Citizen insights across Asia Pacific. It features findings from a survey of 4,192 residents in Hong Kong, Melbourne, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore. The survey seeks residents’ opinions on the development areas most important to them, as well as what benefits they expect as their cities become ‘smarter’. Key focus areas include transportation and mobility, building a future-focused workforce, living environment, healthcare, energy and resources and the impact of technology.
Anson Bailey, Head of Consumer & Retail, ASPAC and Head of Technology, Hong Kong, KPMG China will share insights on the current state of smart city development in the five cities surveyed as well as key differentiators and best practices. A panel comprising Anson Bailey (KPMG), Elke Kornalijnslijper (CLP), Henry Louie (Wilson Group), and Timothy Mak (Signify) will further discuss how can we apply technologies for a smarter Hong Kong – including how to integrate innovation and technology into urban infrastructure to improve sustainability, maximise efficiency and minimise energy usage.

About the speakers
Anson Bailey joined KPMG in Hong Kong in 1999 and is currently a Partner based in the Hong Kong office heading up the Consumer and Retail Practice. He is part of the KPMG Regional Consumer and Retail Practice Leadership team as well as being a member of the Global Technology Innovation Centre and the Cluster Leader for the Technology, Media & Telecoms Practice based in Hong Kong.
Anson has been active in driving a number of thought leadership reports and executive briefings for senior executives covering innovation and consumers in China and across Asia. He has worked with many corporates to understand the complex markets we live in and current levels of disruption being seen with recent reports.
Today, he not only mentors the next generation of go-to-market professionals at KPMG but continues to work with a growing number of C-level executives as a trusted advisor in providing the best in client innovation whilst acting as the Lead Partner for a number of strategic accounts in the consumer and technology arena across the Asia Pacific region.
Elke Kornalijnslijper joined CLP Holdings in August 2017 as Commercial Manager – Innovation, leading the commercial aspects of CLP’s innovation strategy in face of the opportunities presented by digital disruption and the drive towards a low carbon society. Within the energy industry she has been pioneering new services and market segments, as well as restructuring organisations to become more adapt to changing environments. She worked for corporates, start-ups, an accelerators and an investor. She now leads the development of CLP’s ecosystem program and numerous smart city projects.
Henry Louie is the Managing Director for Wilson Group Hong Kong/China. Henry first joined Wilson Group Hong Kong in 1997 and has also been responsible for the Wilson businesses in South Korea and China. Henry relocated back to Hong Kong in January 2018.
Wilson Group is Hong Kong’s leading transport infrastructure management services and smart mobility business with its Parking, Tollways, Smart Mobility, Equipment and Others divisions employing nearly 4,000 people.
Henry is overseeing the company’s recognition that growth of its existing business divisions requires development and application of digital solutions and platforms. He has also been driving the development of new Smart Mobility and Connected City opportunities involving Government departments and private sector clients and partners.
Timothy Mak is currently the market leader for Signify (formerly known as Philips Lighting) in Hong Kong and Macau, obtained a bachelor’s degree of Computer Science in University of London and has accumulated over 30 years of experience in the corporate communication system and information technology industry. He is also entitled with management positions in Korea and Mainland China in his early years and has years of management experience across Asia Pacific regional. His last position was general manager of Avaya Hong Kong, which he was responsible for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Timothy expects Signify to be able to uphold the innovative concept and improve the lives of the public with innovative products under his leadership. Smart cities will become a general trend in the foreseeable future and Signify is expecting to establish a blueprint from this direction, and vigorously develops intelligent technologies into the public which makes a big step forward in the innovation lighting industry.
