From Civil Engineer to Conservation Czar: A Singular Journey

Please email yammie@britcham.com for more information

Little did Michael Moir ever envisage his career trajectory would take him from degrees in engineering at Aberdeen and Glasgow Universities to driving the biggest conservation project undertaken to date in Hong Kong - the Central Police Station Conservation and Revitalisation Project, now operating as Tai Kwun.  From its opening, Tai Kwun has proven a popular arts, culture and entertainment destination and community focal point both for local residents and overseas visitors.   In this presentation, Mike will describe the arc of the project’s realisation, from the initial vision, through public consultation, site inspections, scope of work, design, approvals processes and challenges such as the partially collapsed Block 4, to its lauded unveiling in 2018.

Tai Kwun is the icing on the cake of Mike’s stellar career that began with Ove Arup and has included senior positions with Swire Properties, PCCW Infrastructure and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, as well as consultancies with the Hong Kong Housing Authority, The Hong Kong Urban Renewal Authority, and Hysan Development Company, among others.  He is in a unique position to review how far Hong Kong has travelled in preserving the city’s historical legacy for future generations to take pride in and enjoy.
