Cancer poses a huge and growing challenge, with the number of people around the world who receive a diagnosis each year expected to rise dramatically from 15 million in 2015 to 24 million in 2035. It’s a disease that affects so many individuals and their families.

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) is the world's largest cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Our vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured, from the most common types to those that affect just a few people.

Join CRUK’s Chief Clinician, Professor Charles Swanton, to hear more about how CRUK is working on a global scale to drive pioneering world-class research to better prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. This includes co-founding the Francis Crick Institute – the largest biomedical research facility under one roof in Europe – in partnership with University College London, Imperial College London, King’s College London, the Medical Research Council and Wellcome.

About the speaker

Professor Charles Swanton became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2002, and in 2008 went on to establish his own laboratory at CRUK’s London Research Institute. He is Professor of Personalised Cancer Medicine at University College London (UCL) and still practises as a medical oncologist. He is also one of the founding scientists of the pharmaceutical spin-out Achilles Therapeutics, which is seeking to develop a new immunotherapeutic approach to treating cancer. In 2017, Charles became CRUK’s Chief Clinician and was elected as a member of the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). This is just one of a great many prizes and awards he has received for his groundbreaking work.

At the Francis Crick Institute in London, Professor Charles Swanton is leading TRACERx, a project that explores lung cancer in unprecedented detail. By harnessing state-of-the-art technologies, Charles and his team are scrutinising samples from 850 lung cancer patients to generate comprehensive profiles of their tumours and bring us a step closer to personalised treatments.
