China’s Balancing Act: Stabilising Growth and Defusing Financial Risk

Please email for more information

The Chinese government again faces a delicate balancing act between its short-term goal of stabilising sentiment and growth, and its medium-term goal of de-leveraging and defusing major financial risks.

In view of rising domestic headwinds and external uncertainties, both the Politburo and the State Council have called for more expansionary fiscal policy, while the central bank continues to loosen liquidity and financial regulators offered more flexibility to unwind shadow credit. Furthermore, the government also seems to have changed its strategy in tackling the Sino-US trade disagreement.

At this breakfast briefing, Jian Chang will discuss the Chinese government’s options and the risks its economy faces.
