Innovation - Inspiration and Implementation

In this session, we will explore the innovative ideas and initiatives that have been proposed for Hong Kong, so that Hong Kong can fully capitalise on its unique strengths to benefit from the GBA. Topics will include the promotion of green finance, the provision of cross-boundary financial services and products and the use of fintech solutions. 
 
This panel of senior financial services regulators and industry leaders will discuss their visions for Hong Kong's participation in the GBA and their efforts to turn these into innovative and practical initiatives. Hear directly from top policy-makers and decision-makers. 

 

About the speakers

Benjamin Quinlan is the CEO and Managing Partner of Quinlan & Associates. He is also the Chairman of the FinTech Association of Hong Kong, an Adjunct Professor at the AIT School of Management, a Conference Ambassador for HKTB, and sits on the Advisory and Steering Committees for HKSTP and HKTDC, respectively. He is a Senior Advisor to a number of startups, a Mentor for PingAn’s Cloud Accelerator, and a Guest Contributor for eFinancialCareers and Regulation Asia.

Benjamin has an extensive track record advising many of the world’s leading multinational companies, financial services organisations, SMEs and start-ups on a variety of high-profile strategic engagements. He is quoted extensively in the global financial press and is frequently interviewed by leading media outlets. He is also a regular keynote speaker at leading financial services industry conferences across the world.

Prior to Quinlan & Associates, Benjamin worked at Deutsche Bank, Oliver Wyman, UBS, and PwC.

 

Darryl Chan has been Executive Director (External) since August 2019 with responsibilities for promoting Hong Kong's international financial centre development, offshore RMB business, and policies at international forums to advance financial stability.  He is also Deputy Director of the Infrastructure Financing Facilitation Office.  Prior to joining the HKMA in April 2013 as Executive Director (Corporate Services), Mr Chan was an Administrative Officer in the Hong Kong SAR Government and had worked in different policy bureaux and departments on policy formulation and administration.

 

Dr Au, a 30+ years financial industry veteran, is Executive Director of Financial Services Development Council (FSDC).  

He was named CEO of the Year in HK by Asia Asset Management in 2012 to 2014 and. was awarded the Medal of Honor by the HKSAR Government in 2008 for his valuable contributions to the securities and asset management industry. He was also the Chairman of the HK Securities and Investment Institute from 2006 to 2008 and the Chairman of the HK Investment Funds Association in 2004/2005.

Dr Au received his BA in Physics from the University of Oxford and PhD in Theoretical Particle Physics from Durham University.


Katherine Ng is the Chief Operating Officer and Head of Policy and Secretariat Services Department in the Listing Division.  Ms. Ng joined Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (“HKEX”) in 2013.  Prior to that, Ms. Ng had served as Political Assistant to the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Hong Kong Government, worked in an international investment bank and an international law firm in Hong Kong and London.  Ms. Ng holds a Master of Arts in Law from Trinity College, University of Cambridge and is a qualified lawyer in both Hong Kong and England & Wales.  Ms. Ng has been the Chairman of Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute since December 2018.  She is an Advisor to Our Hong Kong Foundation, a Director of the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong, a fellow of the Aspen Institute and a Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Finance.

 

Wai-Shin Chan is Head of HSBC’s Climate Change Centre of Excellence and also Head of Environmental Social Governance (ESG) research.  His dual role involves analysis of climate change and its multi-asset implications as well as the integration of ESG within HSBC’s Global Research.  Wai-Shin has previously worked as a fund manager and was an equity analyst for several years.  He has also spent time in the non-profit sector focusing on sustainable investing.

Wai-Shin holds a degree in Mathematics and Physics from Durham University and is a CFA charterholder.

 

 

About the moderator

Jill's areas of practice are financial services and corporate regulatory and compliance issues. She is regularly identified as a leading lawyer in legal directories.

She was previously Deputy General Counsel at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and was in-house counsel at Credit Suisse. In addition, Jill has also worked in leading international law firms in Hong Kong. This combination of different legal roles allow her to provide constructive insights into the issues and challenges facing financial institutions, listed companies, their senior managers and professional advisers.

Jill has extensive experience advising on banking and securities laws and rules affecting listed companies and their directors. She advises on both on contentious and non-contentious matters.

Jill is one of the authors of "Securities and Futures Ordinance": Commentary and Annotations, published by Thomson Reuters (now in its 4th edition), and she speaks regularly at client events and industry conferences. She served on the Disciplinary Panel of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants for several years and she is on the Editorial Board of LexisNexis's Practical Guidance series.
