Walkability and its Future in Hong Kong: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Please email yammie@britcham.com for more information

In the past decade, walkability has become a global buzz word and an important metric of urban livability and a city’s overall competitiveness. Hong Kong, long celebrated for efficient mobility and a world-class public transport system, finds itself under a decidedly less flattering light when it gets to walkability: our urban environment is often hostile to pedestrians, being congested, disjointed and poorly maintained.

Walkability is now officially a government priority, advocated by the CE-elect Carrie Lam in her manifesto and detailed in the Hong Kong 2030+ planning strategy.  This is a key topic for business and private citizens alike.   But does the HKSAR government really have the right tools and will to change the course of planning practices and deliver a truly walkable city?
