Today's China is catching up with the rest of the world in terms of embracing consumer trends, thanks to a vibrant middle-class with a growing disposable income level. For the first-time in decades, new-found levels of wealth are creating a fashion-conscious, trend-loving culture that strives for a comfortable and affluent lifestyle.
To learn more about the aspirations and characteristics of what is being called the "New China" the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) conducted a survey of Chinese mainland middle-class consumers in June 2009. The survey looked at spending habits and preferences of China's growing middle-class, as well as examining how foreign brands and retailers are faring in their attempts to tap this burgeoning market.
Pansy Yau, Deputy Chief Economist of HKTDC, supervised the survey, and will provide a presentation that recaps its findings. The session will also include a quick run-through by the HKTDC's Assistant Executive Director, Christopher Jackson, of the services that the HKTDC offers to British companies in Hong Kong.
