There has been much publicity over the last few weeks concerning the latest developments in the tax residency dispute between Mr Gaines-Cooper and the UK HMRC. These are important for many UK expatriates living and working in Hong Kong.

Whilst the Court's confirmation that the UK tax authority must stand by its own guidance in this area is welcomed, it is highly likely that the UK tax authorities will continue to target those expatriates who do not fall squarely within the guidelines. For those working full time outside the UK, the latest ruling is helpful. But for those retirees living in Hong Kong or those working partly in Hong Kong and partly in the UK, and who have families remaining in the UK or other close connections with the UK, they are at real risk of challenge on their UK tax residency status and a resultant exposure to UK tax.

In this breakfast briefing, Guy Ellis, a Tax partner at PricewaterhouseCooppers, Hog Kong and his colleague will provide a brief explanation of the case and discuss the impact that it has for those living and working in Hong Kong.
