Shanghai Expo 2010 is now just over 3 months away. With over 200 participating countries and an expected 70 million visitors, it will be the largest World Expo ever. The Chinese Government has invested US$45 billion to shape the city for Expo; and a further US$5 billion on the site itself.
The UK has grasped the opportunity to showcase the UK as a innovative, creative nation; and to challenge some of the outdated notions about the UK which are current in China. The focal point of the UK@Expo is an amazing pavilion by designer Thomas Heatherwick: over the 6 months of Expo, the pavilion will host between 5-7 million visitors. In addition, there is a programme of over 100 business events, and an arts and culture programme which will spin out from Shanghai across China. Finally, a website will also be developed to provide a knowledge bank about the UK and its partnership with China, as well as opportunities to blog, take part in competitions and games, and social media.
Carma Elliot, the Consul-General in Shanghai, will provide more details about the UK presence at Expo, concentrating in particular on the opportunities for UK business to take part in the programme of events; and to use this platform to showcase their business and engagement in China.
