Speaker:
Dr Mark Hensman, Director of Schools for Harrow International
How are privilege and entitlement defined? How do I know if my child has a sense of entitlement? What is the problem with this anyway? Are there risks? Are there opportunities? These are all questions that will be addressed at the first of a series of lunchtime talks about parenting hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce and Grosvenor. The guest speaker on this occasion is Mark Hensman (DTheol), Director of Schools for Harrow International.

How are privilege and entitlement defined? How do I know if my child has a sense of entitlement? What is the problem with this anyway? Are there risks? Are there opportunities? How can I as a parent try to ensure my child does not grow to have a sense of entitlement and if he or she does, how can I reduce the potentially negative effects?
The greatest resource a child has for navigating his/her way through adolescence and into adulthood is a sense of self-identity. A common feature of privileged families is either too much control or not enough – both work against the development of a full and healthy sense of self-identity because one prescribes it and the other leaves it to chance. Children who grow up with too much control or too little both tend to be more at risk. But more at risk from what? And how can such risks be reduced?
These are all questions that will be addressed at the first of a series of lunchtime talks about parenting hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce and Grosvenor. The answers may surprise in their simplicity.
The guest speaker on this occasion is Mark Hensman (DTheol), Director of Schools for Harrow International. Dr Hensman is an experienced school leader who has headed schools in New Zealand and Thailand. He has been Secretary General of the International Schools’ Association of Thailand, Chairman of the Federation of British International Schools of South and South East Asia and Vice Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand. First and foremost, however, he is a parent, and still learning.
