China - Hong Kong Railways:
Past, Present and Future

The recent outcry for and against construction of a Hong Kong link into the express rail network which is now under construction across the Mainland, echo's the similar manifestations of doubt 100 years ago against investment in expensive rail projects. Notwithstanding heated debates at the end of the 19th century, and perhaps more restrained outcries than now before the actual start of construction, very fortunately for Hong Kong this did not prevent the first passenger train leaving Kowloon for Lo Wu, on 1st October 1910.
This talk will cover not only the similarities between then and now, but also search out some of the subsequent decisions promoting investment in railway projects, that have provided much of the foundation for Hong Kong's transition from fishing village to become a strong player in the global economy.
James Blake, currently Chief Officer of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, has been involved with the Corporation's railway expansion programme since 1997. Having worked in Hong Kong for forty five years, his talk is backed up by film clips and visual record of this century of railway development. The resulting trip down memory lane, will leave some space to look into Hong Kong's future need for rail transport in an increasingly carbon conscious world.
