As an Ambassador for all UK-based financial and professional services, the Lord Mayor travels extensively overseas, promoting the UK's strengths in these sectors. Time magazine coined the Nylongkong acronym in early 2008 to describe the shared economic culture and success of the world's three leading financial centres. Two years after the economic downturn started, the Lord Mayor will give his views on the challenges and opportunities now facing the world's major financial centres, with particular emphasis on where he sees Hong Kong and London heading and how the two centres can work together to mutual benefit.
The Lord Mayor qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Moore Stephens in 1982, then through a series of mergers over the years, joined Arthur Andersen in 1994, becoming a Partner in its Corporate Finance practice. He is now a Senior Director at the international law firm SJ Berwin. He was elected Alderman for the Ward of Aldersgate in 1996 having represented that ward as a Common Councilman since 1987 and served as Sheriff of the City of London in 2003/04. He has served on many of the City of London Corporation’s key committees, including three years as Chairman of its Central Markets Committee. His appointments include being seconded to the Department of Transport in 1995 - 96. He is currently a Director of London Marathon Ltd and an adviser to Barts and the London NHS Trust.
