The recent wave of strikes and suicides at southern Chinese factories has raised fresh questions about the sustainability of "the China price" - the ultra-low cost of Chinese made products - and China's export-dependent economic model.

Former Financial Times journalist Alexandra Harney foretold this rise in labour unrest in her highly acclaimed book 'The China Price: The True Cost of Chinese Competitive Advantage".  Now a visiting scholar at the University of Hong Kong, Alexandra continues to speak to workers and factory managers to provide an up-to-date view of China's factory floor. She will map out the dramatic changes redrawing China's manufacturing and labour landscape and offer suggestions about how companies and investors can adjust to this new environment. .

The China Price, which drew on two years of undercover reporting, has been published in six languages and was named a best book of the year on globalisation by Library Journal. A regular commentator on the BBC and NPR and Japanese TV, Alexandra speaks both Mandarin and Japanese. She has written for the Atlantic Monthly, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time, Forbes, Slate, the China Economic Quarterly and Foreign Policy, and advises investors on how to position themselves in Asia.
