For 10 of the last 15 years at least one major region -- and often more than one -- has been in crisis. The Asian financial crisis of 1997-1999, the dot-com crash of 2000-2002 and the ongoing US and European crisis that began in 2007 have made uncertainty the only certainty.

The current crisis, once known as the credit crunch, has evolved into a broad economic crisis in the West -- and it's not over. In an environment where economic and market dislocation is routine, the primary task of corporate, financial and government leaders is managing risk. What are the new rules of the road for managing risk -- and are they really new?

Asian economies and companies learned many hard lessons from the region's own 1997-1999 crisis and learned them well. What can Asia learn from the current crisis and what are the risks for the region as the crisis in Europe and the US continues?
 

Stuart Gulliver is Group Chief Executive of HSBC Holdings plc and Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.

Mr Gulliver joined HSBC in 1980. Before his appointment as Group Chief Executive he was Chairman of Europe, Middle East and Global Businesses, and prior to that Chief Executive of Global Banking and Markets.

Mr Gulliver was appointed to the Group Management Board in March 2004 and became a Group General Manager in August 2000. He has been an Executive Director of HSBC Holdings plc since May 2008.
